My experience has been that my clients that engage more in the process through thoughts and visualization have a much greater outcome overall. I usually do not start out with it. And I don't do it every session. Just as needed. I wait until they feel comfortable with the whole process and are noticing subtle changes. Then I invite them to start doing some "real work". If they have shared a trauma or issue we start with that if they are ready. Otherwise we will go over their subjective assessment and talk about the 7s or 6s and pick out the most problematic one.

I tend to do future work/goals at the midline, trauma work at the temporals and behavior changes in the parietals. This can change as needed. Alpha and alpha/theta work are always good protocols to process goals as well. Gamma SMR Sync makes many of my clients really happy so I have them think of really happy times in their lives. But most clients have a hard time visualizing with their eyes open.

I like using metaphors for trauma and regrets and processing issues. My forgiveness metaphor is to create a room up a spiral staircase that is bright, white and round. They bring a support person in with them. Then they bring in the perpetrator, who is also to have a support person. They stretch out their hands and symbolically return to them what belongs to them, forgive them and invite them to heal, just as they are trying to do. My Christians tend to invite Christ to support them, Catholics - Mother Mary, etc. It is whatever they feel comfortable with. One person had her dog with her. There is no right or wrong here. It is processing things in a safe place.

All processing includes forgiveness of others and self. All releasing includes lessons learned from the experience and looking at it from every perspective. Sometimes the only lesson that can be learned is to never be a victim again, or never allow that person in your life again, etc.

I have done this on young kids that were afraid of the dark to 60+ year old women that needed to process huge childhood trauma. It is one of the most fulfilling parts of my practice. You get to share with people that are ready to let go and forgive and move on. I look at it as a very sacred honor to support them and assist them in their work to heal.

It is during this processing that I can also tell if they need to work with a professional counselor. I have counselors I work with and we refer back and forth. Neurofeedback gets them to a place where they can finally talk about their issues and get to the root and work it through with a counselor. It saves time for me to do NFB instead of having to listen to them talk about their stuff. And a LPC is trained to do that. A very synergistic relationship!

I should also note that clients rarely come in to see me for an issue they want to process/clear/heal from. They come in because their life is not working. Their brain is not clear. This stuff just comes up without me having to say much. And so often I know nothing about what they process because I tell them how to do it so they can keep it private.
